BARC Junior Research Fellowship Recruitment 2026: Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai has invited online applications for the award of 105 Junior Research Fellowships (indicative) in the disciplines of Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences. This fellowship is one of the most important research opportunities for science graduates and postgraduates who want to pursue advanced research in frontier areas connected with atomic energy, basic science, applied science and interdisciplinary research. Selected candidates will be registered for Ph.D. in Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), a deemed university of the Department of Atomic Energy, and will work on research problems relevant to BARC programmes.

The official advertisement number is 4/2026(R-V). The online application window is available from 10 March 2026 to 31 March 2026. Applications are accepted in online mode only. Candidates should read the eligibility rules carefully before applying because BARC has specified subject-wise academic requirements, national-level qualifying examinations, minimum marks, document rules, fee rules and interview-based final selection. This recruitment is especially useful for candidates who have already qualified national eligibility tests such as UGC-CSIR-NET Fellowship, JEST, ICMR-JRF, ICAR-JRF, DBT-JRB, GATE in relevant subjects, or JGEEBILS.

To be eligible, candidates must be Indian nationals with a consistently good academic record. For the regular M.Sc. route, applicants should have secured at least 60% aggregate in B.Sc. and 55% aggregate in M.Sc.. Candidates with five-year Integrated M.Sc. or B.S.-M.S. (Dual Degree) should have a minimum of 55% aggregate. Candidates with a 4-year / 8-semester B.S. degree with fourth-year research are also eligible if they have secured 75% aggregate. Candidates whose final results are awaited may apply, but they must satisfy the minimum marks condition up to the latest declared semester and must complete the academic requirements before the deadline mentioned in the notification.

BARC has clearly separated the fellowship into three broad streams. For Physics, Mathematics must have been one of the subjects at B.Sc. level. For Chemistry, candidates should hold M.Sc. in General, Applied, Organic, Inorganic, Physical or Analytical Chemistry, with Physics as an ancillary subject at B.Sc. level and Mathematics at H.Sc. level. For Life Sciences, the accepted subjects include Life Science, Botany, Zoology, Agriculture, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Marine Biology, Bioinformatics, Genetics, Plant Science, Plant Breeding, Plant Pathology, Entomology, Animal Science, Biomedical Sciences, Biosciences, Food Science and Food Science & Technology, provided the candidate studied Physics, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Agriculture Chemistry or another allied Chemistry subject at B.Sc. or five-year integrated M.Sc. level. The notification also lists several specializations that are not eligible, so candidates should cross-check their exact discipline before final submission.

The age limit is less than 28 years as on 01 August 2026. Age relaxation is available as per the notification: 3 years for OBC-NCL, 5 years for SC/ST, and 10 years for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD). The date of birth entered in the application must match the matriculation or birth certificate because BARC has specifically stated that later correction requests will not be entertained. Category certificates should be in the prescribed Government of India format and must remain valid at the time of interview and document verification.

The selection process is merit-based and interview-centric. First, applications are screened on the basis of the relevant national-level qualifying examination and the marks obtained in the qualifying academic degree. Only shortlisted candidates are called for interview at BARC, Mumbai. Final selection is based on performance in the interview only, and in case of a tie, marks in M.Sc. / B.Sc. are considered. BARC also reserves the right to screen applicants and call only those candidates who are found suitable. Therefore, merely meeting the minimum eligibility conditions does not guarantee an interview call.

The application fee is ₹500, payable online through net banking, debit card, credit card, UPI or other available digital modes. However, women candidates, SC candidates, ST candidates and PwBD candidates are exempted from payment of the fee. After successful submission of the online form, the applicant must make payment using the generated application number; otherwise, the application will remain incomplete and liable for rejection. Fee once paid is non-refundable.

The fellowship amount is also attractive. Selected candidates will initially join as Junior Research Fellows and receive ₹37,000 per month for the first two years. Based on satisfactory annual review, the fellowship is upgraded to Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) from the third year with a consolidated stipend of ₹42,000 per month. The total fellowship tenure is five years. Fellows are also entitled to a contingency grant including book allowance of ₹60,000 per year. At places where hostel accommodation is unavailable, admissible HRA is payable as per Government of India guidelines. Interview candidates called to Mumbai are eligible for reimbursement of Third AC rail fare by the shortest route, subject to rules and original tickets.

Applicants should keep scanned copies of educational certificates, category documents, photograph, signature and valid email/mobile number ready before applying. The online application system accepts only one valid application, and incorrect or misleading entries may lead to rejection at any stage. Shortlisted candidates will have to bring the printout of the application form, original mark sheets, degree certificates, proof of date of birth, category certificate, disability certificate if applicable, and NOC from employer if already employed in Government / PSU / local body service. Since all future updates are expected through the BARC website and the online portal, candidates should check the website regularly.

Overall, the BARC JRF 2026 recruitment is ideal for candidates aiming for a strong research career in national laboratories and doctoral research under a reputed scientific institution. The fellowship combines research exposure, financial support, Ph.D. registration at HBNI, interview-based selection and long-term academic value. Candidates who satisfy the prescribed subject combination, minimum marks and national test requirement should complete the online form well before the last date to avoid payment and upload issues at the final stage.
